区永祥(英文名:David W. Ow),植物分子生物学和基因工程领域国际知名科学家,男,美籍华人,祖籍广东省南海。1955年 10月生于香港,7岁到美国,1978年6月美国加州大学伯克利分校遗传学学士;1983年1月哈佛大学细胞发育生物学博士,1983年1至7月在波士顿马萨诸塞州总医院哈佛医学院当遗传学博士后;1983年8月至1984年7月应邀到中国科学院上海植物生理研究所做访问学者;1984年9月至1986年11月在加州大学圣地亚哥分校任美国国家科学基金博士后;1986年12月至2009年12月任美国农业部/加州大学伯克利分校植物基因表达中心(Plant Gene Expression Center)首席研究员。2003年评为美国农业部太平洋西部地区年度优秀科学家。2010年1月起任华南植物园基因工程中心主任,广东省领军人才。 区博士大学开始研究噬菌体分子遗传学. 研究生至中国访问学者期间研究固氮基因的调控。回美国后,转向植物基因工程, 把萤火虫萤光索酶向烟草体内表达。作为实验室负责人,他开了几个研究方向,包括金属与氧化胁迫耐受基因、棉花基因工程等。他最为公认的研究是开发了位点特异重组系统来做基因工程,如把标记基因的位点特异删除。 区博士已发表SCI论文56篇,其中四分之一的论文是发表在国际顶级学术杂志上,包括Nature,Science, Nature Biotechnology, PNAS, EMBO J., Genes & Development等。他的基因工程技术专利已被国际著名的转基因公司使用,产生了巨大的经济效益。近年,他的一项发明为加州大学10个校区排在前10位。 Email: dow@scbg.ac.cn
